Time for an actual blog post… This was initially a goals post, but I’ve decided to make to into something a bit more detailed.
Let’s start with, what did I do last year?
I met Cliff Ravenscraft (after dropping everything with 1 days notice) and showed him around the lower South Island of New Zealand. He is now one of my favourite podcasters. At the time I didn’t know him all that well, but 800kms in 1.5 days fixed that. You can hear Cliff’s recounting of the story over here.
I got a new job! I’m really enjoying my new job. I swore that I wouldn’t go back to MSP work, but I did, and now it’s fantastic. We went to Mrs Brown’s Boys in March and met the entire cast and got autographs which was pretty awesome! Also in March I started building my “twitter tool” which is going to be the precursor to TweetRobot.
In April I re-themed this blog and also managed to cobble together backups to restore all of my blog posts going back to 2006. Man I was a weird child… though not much has changed! My business picked up a second major customer, and this resulted in being able to pay myself a salary for a few months, though I decided to reinvest the money instead so I haven’t paid myself in a while.
May! I met Emily for the first time, and realised that I hadn’t actually ever heard her voice in the 5 years that we had known each other. This was the month that I got back into Home Automation, though it stalled a bit as the year went past. I’m still collecting hardware so that when I do go all in, I’ll have everything I need (famous last words). We went to the Capping show, which was funny as always, but that might be the last time we were to go because Becky graduated (hurrah!). This month marked the final run of This Little Card, because of how much work it is to do. The cards are still sitting in a cupboard but I’m not really sure what to do with them. Work started prodding me about doing certifications, so I bought a whole stack of routers and switches… and did nothing with them. A job for 2017.
Apparently June, July and August were boring….
September and October saw us going to see Post Modern Jukebox and also the launch of this site, including the Questions podcast. Don’t forget I’m always looking for new guests – Guest Form. We started my food bag, which is just fantastic. I hate picking meals so not having to pick meals, and having interesting healthy meals has been awesome. Tech Explainer was born and I roped Mike in. We still haven’t launched it yet. I got myself business cards for the podcasting and gave quite a few out in the first week.
October also saw the wedding planning ramping up including a weekend visit from my parents and Becky’s parents to get a lot of planning done. We visited the venue too and all got all of our ideas written down.
In November, I got myself a new digital mixer for podcasting. One with moving faders… something I had been dreaming about for a long long time. Very exciting but also very expensive! It made a huge difference to podcast audio quality and ease of recording, so I’m calling it a win. I started v4 of the Car PC and didn’t get very far at all.
In December, we finished off most of the wedding planning. I also got my new Mac Book Pro which is just amazing and having macOS is making writing code significantly easier! I started learning Test Driven Development after years of being a terrible developer and not writing any test at all. I hit 1 year until my student loan will be paid off, can’t wait! We had 3 Chorus outages in South Dunedin, which took a lot of customers offline. Not a good couple of weeks. As a friend in the ISP business said, we don’t talk about that week. Speaking of friends, I found myself becoming fast friends with Rachel and Jade. I’m also seeing what is the hopeful beginnings of another friendship with someone I met at work. After years of being too busy to be social, it’s all happening at once!
Now onto 2017…
One of my big targets for 2017 is to lose 25KGs and run the Relay for Life. To achieve this, I’m setting myself the goal of exercising for 30 minutes at least 5 days a week. The idea is that I’ll ramp that up as I get fitter. I’m also going to stop eating junk. hah. Maybe I’ll re-join the gym once my weight and fitness is at a level that I can’t go below at home.
I want to get back into playing the piano, and I have signed up for some online piano courses to help with this. I want to play at least 30 minutes, 3 days a week.
On the podcasting front, I want to launch Tech Explains by 1st March (you reading this Mike?) and I want to release an episode of Questions every Sunday at 12pm.
I spoke about Tweet Robot waaaay up the top. I want to get that launched as a commercial product along with Question Machine (the tool behind the Questions podcast). I’m also working on PictureBot, which is a tool for novelty picture posting Twitter accounts, to help manage those. That one will just be released as Open Source. All 3 will be built in Laravel, of course.
I also want to meet Rachel and Jade this year! Plane flights may be required.
