The prompt was: A serial killer finishes off each victim with the phrase, “Tell my mother I’m sorry.” Write the backstory.
It all started 10 years ago when Selby’s mother died at his hands. She was taking the Christmas decorations out of the attic, it being late November. They always seemed to put the tree up early because nobody in the house could bare to wait until December. Selby who was 15 at the time was running around as teen boys do, immersed in his own world, and didn’t see the ladder up into the attic, and he ran straight into it.
It just so happened that his mother was coming down the ladder, her arms full of Christmas decorations, ready for the tree that was waiting in the living area. Selby’s mother died instantly when she fell from the ladder and couldn’t be revived. Selby didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye, or that he was sorry.
The funeral was one of the hardest days of his life and he just couldn’t bring himself to speak (Something he would regret for a long time). The fact that he was ultimately responsible for his mother’s death weighed heavily on him as he carried along through his life. He wished that he could tell her he was sorry, more than anything else in the world.
On the 10th anniversary of her death, something broke inside him, and he had the craziest idea yet. He would find people, send them to heaven by killing them, and have them take the message to his mother, that he was sorry for causing her death. He chose his targets by looking around and judging if they would be reliable enough to deliver his message.
He wasn’t sure that they would do him this service, given that he would have to kill them first, but just the possibility gave him all the comfort he needed to continue with his life.
